Common questions about this calculator

Measure the area (length × width) and multiply by desired depth. For a 50ft × 10ft driveway with 3 inches of gravel: 500 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 125 cubic feet (4.6 cubic yards). Add 10% for compaction.

Gravel weight varies by type: pea gravel weighs about 2,700 lbs/cubic yard, crushed stone about 2,800 lbs, and river rock about 2,400 lbs. The calculator uses accurate density values for each gravel type.

For driveways: 4-6 inches (3 layers: base, middle, surface). For walkways: 2-3 inches. For drainage: 4-12 inches depending on water volume. The calculator recommends depths based on your application.

Multiply cubic yards by the material density, then divide by 2000. For crushed gravel: 1 cubic yard × 2800 lbs ÷ 2000 = 1.4 tons. The calculator automatically converts between volume and weight units.

Suppliers typically sell by ton (weight) or cubic yard (volume). Buying by ton is more accurate since moisture doesn't affect weight. The calculator provides both measurements for easy ordering.

Order 10-15% extra to account for spreading losses, uneven ground, and compaction. For areas with soft soil, order 20% extra as some gravel will sink into the ground initially.
